Clemons was born in Norfolk, Virginia, the oldest of the three children of Thelma Clemons and her husband Clarence, who owned a fish market. He was moving among the same circle of local musicians as Springsteen, and first ran into him when they were both playing gigs in separate bars in the seaside resort of Asbury Park.
