When forming a sentence in your head, the word that takes the most thought is usually the verb. What tense should you use? How do you conjugate an irregular verb in that tense?

Spanish grammar is extensive and often not exciting to learn. But there is hope! One of the best ways to learn Spanish grammar is to not study grammar specifically.

Instead of learning lists of conjugations and sentences, learn grammar in a more natural way. As children, we learn to say verbs and conjugations first; not until years later do we even learn what verbs are. So, what is the best way to study grammar? Listen and repeat. Exposure to the language is essential so that you can hear Spanish in its natural context and pick up verb conjugations without having to know the name of the tense or conjugation. For example, instead of practicing the complete list of conjugations for the past simple tense of escribir , memorize the conjugations in a sentence or phrase.

Putting the verb in context makes it seem more natural and easier to remember. As mentioned, to learn Spanish you need to create new pathways in your brain connecting the Spanish words to objects or activities.

A great way to do this is with visual tools, like flashcards, labels, images, or physical activities. Our last tip is to be intentional. Repetition and intentionality are key. I was looking for "piensas" and decided to skip the task which resulted in a wrong answer. Google Translate shows: How about? Curious task, I'd say. In a real life conversation, the native Spanish speaker would understand the gist of the inquiry. Good thing about real life every day communication using Spanish, if we only know the basics with three or four words, the listener will understand just as well as if we use a ten word statement in grammatically correct Spanish.

This is actually a phrase in Spanish that means all kinds of things. I had to Google what it meant and Google translated "How about" with a description below saying 'Phrase' "What do you think?

So it's always said together and means lots of different things. A Great observation about the Spanish language in real life! We tend to get frustrated with a computer which is never going to be able to understand all the idioms and regional slang of real life. Telenovelas all have the same plot, but the docudramas are great to listen and learn from native speakers and varying slang and expressions.

Que te parece is a great example, a lot depends on the context of the individual conversation. Duo will include tiles for his preferred answer, but his preferred answer is rarely the only possible answer. The ways to determine whether the answer you want is included among all acceptable answers is to 1 type it in, or 2 do your best with the tiles and then come to the discussion to find out whether someone else has tried and perhaps succeeded with the answer you prefer.

I should add that your posts seem to be addressing Duo. Unfortunately, no one from Duolingo reads the forum comments. The forum is for us learners to help each other, not to complain to Duo.

To get Duo's attention, click on the "report" button and choose one or more of the selections offered. Answers in the " usted " or " ustedes " form with or without the actual subject pronoun are accepted, as are answers in the " vosotros ", " vosotras ", and " vos " forms. I cant see the hints for this sentence right now, but sometimes not all are immediately viewable in which case there is a downward pointing arrow to indicate that more hints are available.

Also, the hints offer one or more possible correct translations, but that does not mean that what you see is correct in the context of the sentence presented. It is up to the student to decide. What's worse is that the tip says it's te piensas, as though you've got the ending wrong.

If you have found one that is in error, you can report it as "The dictionary hints on hover are wrong". The hint that Duo gave for this is misleading. When I gave the answer "como pareces", forgetting the article, it gave me the hint that verbs with "tu" take an --es ending, and gave parecas as an example.

That's wrong, and should be fixed. There seems to be no reason to use parece because parence is he, she think. What is the reason to use it? Idioms and regional dialects always vary greatly. It's not wrong. Thank goodness we don't have multiple words for the same thing in English huh? There seems to be a lot of misinformation in this discussion. The verb Duo is using here is parecerse, not parecer. Parecerse is to look alike or to be like, so this must be a Spanish idiom a phrase that we just have to learn.

May I disagree, jcharroux? I believe Frank, Bruce and Christophe are correct that Duo is using parecer to seem, to appear with the indirect object pronoun te.
